Album Review: Rihanna — "Loud"
Two things
For the most part, I really like this album. The four stars aren’t meant to be ironic.
And, I’ve never written about pop music in any significant capacity before reviewing Loud, but found myself really enjoying the process. Perhaps there will be more of this to come.
Elsewhere: Here you’ll find a pretty decent dubstep remix of the inevitably ubiquitous “Only...

Album Review: The Radio Dept. — "Never Follow...
The Radio Dept.’s new EP, Never Follow Suit, sees them dabbling with dub rhythms while maintaining their known quantities of twee shoegaze. With the exception of the closer, a campy remix by fellow Swedes Pistol Disco, the shift is quite pleasant.
A few thoughts for Consequence of Sound.

Take Cover: A.C. Newman vs. a-ha
It took three releases and two videos for a-ha to make a dent with “Take on Me.” I’m glad they persevered. I think A.C. Newman is, too. Here are a few additional thoughts for MAGNET.

Someone Please Buy Me 'New York Tropical'
On the heels of their parties of same name, DJ/Rupture and the Dutty Artz crew released what sounds like a fairly sick dub compilation today. Listen here.

NYT on the Link Between Photography and Music →
Tim Arango, of the Times, has a great piece in today’s edition that covers an initiative within Time Warner to “recover the company’s story — and a good chunk of American cultural history as well — by excavating the contents of nearly 100,000 boxes from warehouses around the globe, whose accumulated photographs and other memorabilia track popular music from the Edwardian and...

New Memoryhouse 7" — "Caregiver"
Gorilla vs. Bear is streaming new material from the ambient pop band Memoryhouse, a two-piece from Ontario that I interviewed at-length a few months ago for CoS. I’ve also embedded the song, “Heirloom,” below, in addition to the single’s A-side, “Caregiver,” courtesy of Danger Village.
My fondness didn’t stop at the CoS piece, either. I wrote about them...

Album Review: Lissie — "Catching A Tiger"
Lissie masterfully channeled melancholy through dusty, wistful folk on 2009’s Why You Runnin’ EP. Unfortunately, her work suffered when the stakes inched higher for her debut album, Catching A Tiger. A few thoughts for Consequence of Sound.

Feature: Deerhunter — Public Image Limited →
Atlanta’s ambient punks only get better (and more press savvy) with time. You’ve heard all the hype about Halcyon Digest and, so far as I’m concerned, it’s warranted. Here’s a feature I wrote on the band for this week’s Nashville Scene.

Take Cover! James Blake Vs. Feist
Rising UK dub producer James Blake covered Feist’s “Limit to Your Love” with a soulful austerity. Here’s my latest for Magnet Magazine.

David Bazan's New Christmas 7"
The freaks have gone to rest and the more Rockwell-ian holidays are on the horizon. And, though I’m psyched about the bounty of Southern cooking that awaits me in a few short weeks, I don’t want to get ahead of myself.
No, for me, the first semblance of Christmas is always the arrival of a new David Bazan Christmas 7”, and today brought such an occasion. Limited to just 1000...
