Album Review: Magic Kids' "Memphis" →
My first printed work for the Nashville Scene ran today. Having read it since I first migrated here in 2000, needless to say, I’m psyched.
I never thought I’d positively use the phrase “sock-hop” when writing about a collection of songs, but this debut brought it out of me. Memphis is a very fun, smart record.
The link is above.

Take Cover! Johnny Cash vs. NIN →
Of all the covers I’ve, um, covered, this one by far invites the most dialogue. Folks are downright mean to each other on YouTube. I had no idea.
In other news: Failure once covered Depeche Mode really well.

I reviewed this gorgeous new Frahm track/video for MAGNET yesterday. As summer draws to a close, now would be a good time to purchase his Wintermusik album, in addition to the new single, Unter | Über, both from Erased Tapes.

The Perils of Hipster Christianity →
The title of this article, found in the Wall Street Journal, speaks for itself. Some truth:
“If the evangelical Christian leadership thinks that “cool Christianity” is a sustainable path forward, they are severely mistaken. As a twentysomething, I can say with confidence that when it comes to church, we don’t want cool as much as we want real.
If we are interested in...

In Memoriam: Samuel Mockbee →
Not many of you, much less my friends, know that I really wanted to be an architect at one point. Alas, my inability to comprehend Calculus negated that brief dream, but fortunately two of my best friends made it all the way through arch school, so in a way I’ve been able to live vicariously through them (minus the regular all-nighters, thankfully).
One of them, Mark Wise, now a professor...

I’ll be interviewing Evan and Denise of Memoryhouse tomorrow afternoon for Consequence of Sound, in anticipation of their upcoming Nashville date with Twin Sister. That show is Monday, the 16th, at The End.
Download their debut EP, The Years, for free.

Review: Goldmund's "Famous Places" →
The editing team at Consequence of Sound is on speed. I submitted this review last night and it was already sitting comfortably in my RSS feed early this AM. This is a good thing, though, because this record deserves all the attention it can get and more.
As I argue in the piece, Famous Places follows new records by Hammock, Max Richter and Balmorhea that have all worked me over in 2010,...

Adam Gold on Efforts to Rebrand Nashville →
The cover story in this week’s Nashville Scene is both enlightening and inspiring. Having just moved back to Music City earlier this year, I had no idea Mayor Dean was working so hard to overhaul the city’s one-note image. There may be little-to-no budget, but it’s worth noting nonetheless the private-public strategy that’s driving the effort:
”’I think one...

Review: Film School's "Fission" →
I wanted to like this record. Last year, I stumbled across an earlier Film School track, “11:11,” which I loved, so I jumped on the opportunity to review Fission. My experience with the record did not go as planned, unfortunately.

Take Cover! Beck vs. The Korgis →
This has far-and-away been my favorite Take Cover! column to write. One of my favorite songs, period, and I managed to work Don Delillo into the piece, easily one of my favorite novelists.
The link is at the top, friends.

Take Cover! Beach House vs. Daniel Johnston →
Like many others, I didn’t know Beach House was covering Daniel Johnston when I first heard “Some Things Last a Long Time” on Devotion. Now, I know, and can easily say that the time spent learning more about Mr. Johnston before writing this latest column for MAGNET was time well-spent.
