The New York Times

I worked in the Times’ newsroom from February 2016 to May 2017, first on the Metropolitan desk and eventually for National, Photo, Obits, and Culture. Culture was The Goal given my writing background, and the experience mostly gave me what I wanted from it: A few bylines, sure, but more the chance to see how some of my favorite critics and editors pulled my favorite section together every day.

My most memorable experience on the desk happened on Dec. 28, 2016, when Twitter was flooded mental health coming out stories in the immediate wake of Carrie Fisher’s death. Tara Parker-Pope and I hopped on the phone with several people, working late to get a story up about how the actress made it okay for people to be vulnerable about their struggles. I also helped report the obit for William Peter Blatty, author of “The Exorcist.”
